Sony PS5 Pro (Play Station 5) Overview 2024

The PS5 Pro has been officially revealed. After months of leaks, Sony has just announced a more powerful PS5 console during a special tech demo. Mark Cerny, the lead architect of the PS5 console, says the PS5 Pro improves on the original console in three key areas: a larger GPU, improved ray tracing, and custom AI-powered upscaling.

New PS5 Pro Expected Prices In 2024

The PS5 Pro will launch on November 7 for $699.99 and will look similar to the slim version of the PS5 — as recent leaks have suggested. It has three lines on the sides and doesn’t come with a disc drive. You’ll be able to buy a 4K Blu-ray drive separately and additional cases for the console

Available: November 7, 2024

Preorders: September 26, 2024

Price: $699.99 USD, £699.99 GBP, €799.99 EUR, and ¥119,980 JPY (includes tax)

Highlights Features PS5 Pro

GPU Upgrade: With PS5 Pro, we’re moving to a GPU that has 67% more compute units than the current PS5 console and 28% faster memory. Overall, this delivers up to 45% faster rendering for gameplay, making for a smoother experience.

Advanced Ray Tracing: We’ve added more powerful ray tracing that allows for more dynamic reflection and refraction of light. This allows beams to travel two and sometimes three times faster than the current PS5 console.

AI Upscaling: We’re also introducing PlayStation Spectral Supersolution, an AI-powered upscaling that uses machine learning-based technology to deliver ultra-sharp image clarity by adding an extraordinary amount of detail.

“This is the most powerful console we’ve ever built,” Cerny says. According to Cerny, the internal hardware upgrades will result in a 45 percent increase in render speed and should improve some games’ detail and frame rates. One of the main reasons for the PS5 Pro is to allow PS5 Pro players to not choose performance modes over resolution modes. “Players choose to perform about three-quarters of the time,”
 Cerny says.
Sony has updated the GPU inside the PS5 Pro, with 67 percent more compute units than the current PS5 console, as well as 28 percent faster memory. All of this adds up to 45 percent faster game rendering and the ability to improve frame rates in games without losing visual fidelity. This extra power should also improve ray tracing games, with Sony suggesting that developers will be able to “shoot ray tracing at twice and sometimes three times the speed of the current PS5 console.”

The PS5 Pro also includes Sony’s new AI-powered PlayStation Spectral Supersolution (PSSR) feature, which is essentially an upscaling technology similar to Nvidia’s DLSS or AMD’s FSR to improve frame rates and image quality in PlayStation games. This custom PSSR upgrade aims to replace a game’s current implementation of temporal smoothing or upsampling. Cerny briefly showed off several games running on the PS5 Pro, including The Last of Us Part II in more detail while still targeting 60 frames per second instead of the PS5’s 30fps resolution mode. Sony’s goal is to deliver graphics-like fidelity at production frame rates in games like Spider-Man 2 and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart.

Sony is also including a “Game Boost” option for the PS5 Pro that will apply to more than 8,500 backwards compatible PS4 games on the PS5 Pro. “This feature may stabilize or improve the performance of supported PS4 and PS5 games,” said Hideaki Nishino, general manager of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s platform business group. “There is also an Enhanced Image Quality for PS4 games to improve the resolution of select PS4 games.”

The PS5 Pro will also support Wi-Fi 7 connectivity, VRR, and 8K resolution, and CNET’s Scott Stein, who got his first look at the console, says it now comes with a larger 2TB SSD and changes one of its rear USB ports to an additional USB-C port. He says it will also still include an optional SSD slot for expansion.

Games will need to be patched to take advantage of some PS5 Pro features, and Sony says developers are preparing free software updates for existing games that will be labeled as PS5 Pro Enhanced games — up to 50 of which will launch on November 7, according to CNET.

The first PS5 Pro Enhanced games will include Alan Wake 2, Assassin's Creed Shadows, Demon's Souls, Dragon's Dogma 2, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Gran Turismo 7, Hogwarts Legacy, Horizon Forbidden West, Marvel's Spider-Man 2, and Ratchet & Clank: Rift. Aside from that, The Crew Motorfest, The First Descendant, and The Last of Us Part II have been remastered.

Of the initial batch of games, most should now be able to run at 4K resolution and 60fps frame rates, but CNET was also able to try out Gran Turismo 7 in its new 8K mode and 4K ray tracing mode. Developers can also reportedly add volumetric lighting or even show more characters in the background of a scene.

The PS5 Pro is also compatible with the PlayStation VR2 headset — which Cerny told CNET will eventually support high-resolution gaming — the PlayStation Portal handheld console, and existing PS5 controllers. Sony says it’s not changing the PS5 Pro’s user interface or online services, so it will be identical to the current console.

The first “PS5 Pro Enhanced” games have been revealed, including Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, The Last of Us Part II Remastered, and more
Sony finally confirmed the PS5 Pro this morning, and in addition to enhanced features like Wi-Fi 7 and 8K gaming, PlayStation executives shared new information about how new and old games will work on the system, and all the current games that can use the Pro features.

One of the features that will be included in the PS5 Pro is called Game Boost. The official PlayStation blog notes that PS5 Pro Game Boost “may stabilize or improve the performance of supported PS4 and PS5 games.” It also says that the “enhanced image quality” on the Pro may improve the resolution of some PS4 games.

Sony has shared a short, partial list of games that will receive free patches to take advantage of the Pro’s graphics and performance features. Games that will be called “PS5 Pro Enhanced” include:

Alan Wake 2
Assassin’s Creed Shadows
Demon’s Souls
Dragon’s Creed II
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
Gran Turismo 7
Hogwarts Legacy
Forbidden Horizon West
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
Crew Car Festival
The First Dynasty
The Last of Us Part II Remastered

We don’t know what non-Pro-enhanced games will look like on the system. In an interview with CNET , Sony said that around 40-50 games will receive an update for the PS5 Pro when the system launches in November.
